Summary

The Architectural Design Manager executes design strategies to achieve the property expansion program consisting of new, relocations, temporary and store conversion projects across the US specifically focusing on the architectural, MEP and permitting part of the design process. This leader will effectively exhibit JD Finish Line's core values of Customer, People, Winning, Community, and Financial Responsibility in everything they do by performing the following key duties:
  • Manage and coordinate 3rd party Architects and MEP consultants to ensure all information, drawings and permitting is in line with project schedules, RFIs are being answered in a timely manner whilst the highest quality of drawings standards are being delivered with minimal defects and discrepancies.
  • Lead the permit expeditor process to ensure timelines are issued in accordance with key project milestones, with accountability for ensuring projects are submitted for landlord and building reviews on time.
  • Undertake regular tendering of contracts in relation to Architectural, MEP and expeditor services, including cost negotiations, scope of work reviews, service level agreements and compliancy, ensuring you balance best value for money with the highest standards of service and quality of drawing information produced.
  • Maintain an Architects log of work, inclusive of costings and change orders to ensure all costs agreed are in line with demands of the retail sector and relevant to work undertaken / aborted / scope changes. This also applied to MEP and Expeditor services.
  • Actively QC all 3rd party consultancy drawings and information produced, through implementing and maintaining a best practice policy to meeting USA/AIA codes and standards.
  • Arrange building surveys in accordance with expansion requirements / program, ensuring information received is detailed and thorough, keeping aborted costs to a minimum.
  • Collaborate with the Global HQ Design team to maximize store design opportunities relevant to space whilst following the JD Global DNA and design standards.
  • Follow JD Global design guidelines for new and existing store standards when assessing/ reviewing stores within an architectural capacity, ensuring 3rd party consultants have interpreted the design in accordance with its purpose (both aesthetically and from a technical build perspective)
  • Work with the Global HQ Design Team to seek out opportunities to value engineer the design through your technical knowledge and understanding of construction in the US I.E retaining elements of previous tenant fit out which would not have a material impact of the Global design standards, US build requirements etc.
  • Attend regular meetings between local and UK teams where the JD Global team will present store designs to obtain wider stakeholder feedback and approval.
  • Contribute to the wider design department management team through sharing best practice, ideas and suggestions observed, and implemented within the US market following alignment with the Global Design team.
  • Run weekly Architectural status calls with the US Architects and Global design team, providing meeting reports and meeting recaps to ensure all are aligned with expected dates.
  • Drive continuous improvement with regards to technical elements of the store design application, including external architects, MEP and expeditors and their individual team members.
  • Support the senior leadership, store, real estate and operational teams by participating and contributing in planning and development meetings, providing expert technical advice relating to store fit out and construction.
  • Be available for working within appointed architect's office to train, work alongside and assist in drawing submissions to ensure accuracy and knowledge of JD Global design standards.
  • Issue signed off construction drawings and as-builts to landlords, architect, vendors and GCs as and when required.
  • Ensure all drawings and registers are up-to-date and issue revisions to architects, vendors, GCs and landlords.
  • Collaborate with the Global design team at the early stages of the design process, to provide local support and insight based on your knowledge of US regulations and code.
  • Coordinate the shop drawing reviews for all JD vendors and ensure documentation is translated to construction document sets.
  • Perform a page turn review of all construction documents submitted prior to GC Bid.
  • Manage technology platforms to ensure documents and data are submitted correctly and follow best practices.
  • Manage RFI process with collaboration between JD Global design, AOR, project manager, and general contractor for a timely solution during the construction process.
  • Maintain AutoCAD drawing standards (blocks, layers, page layout, etc.) provided by JD Global Design Team to ensure drawing integrity and technical operating practices in accordance to AIA | US industry standards.
  • Ensure Architect's own the local and state requirements for code and are including all of these elements in their drawings to minimize risk of inspections not being met during project execution.
  • Review and comment on Site Assessments, ensuring Architect, RE & PM have captured clearly all the items listed within the tool, or have given valid points of why the items are not listed.
  • Up to 30% travel.
  • Other projects and duties as assigned.
Required Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree and 5 - 7 years of relevant retail industry experience at all stages of the design and architectural process, from conception through to implementation and delivery, with a particular focus on architectural design.

Required Technical Skills

Should have intermediate knowledge and abilities with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint or Google Suite equivalents. Excellent knowledge of AutoCAD or Revit, and Adobe Photoshop with good 3D skills in Sketchup being desirable. Ability to write, read, review, analyze and interpret technical documents from landlord specifications to design documents.
